Is Lent Still Relevant?
We live in what seems like most perilous times.
We are exposed to the cumulative everyday stress of
a mass media and corporate greed that seems to
threaten the very sanity of our culture and minds. We
have the ability, militarily or environment- ally, and we
have seen that there are many who would appear
open to having that happen.
Humanity fights over power, often wrapped in the
sacred words of religion, not only in our own Christian
denominations, but also in violence between the
great Religions of the world. Is this really what God
has in mind for Creation?
So with all the troubles of the present day, does
Lent become just one more burden on an already
overextended consciousness? In my own experience,
I would have to state a resounding NO!
As Christians, we have been invited to enter into
Communion with God through the example of the
Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent
reflects, in the palest of ways, the Passion of our
Lord, and that most revealing of Jesus’ pleas: “My
God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” It is only
by detaching ourselves from every human
connection- both the good and the bad- that we are
able to enter into the total naked abandonment that
Jesus had to experience on the Cross in order to rise
again. Lent invites us into a personal and interior
exploration of our own ability- or rather inability- to
deal with life’s burdens without any help from God,
our loved one’s or the Church.
It is only by denying that which we THINK we
are, that we can enter into the Resurrection of whom
God has actually created us to BE. This Lent, take
time to explore the angst and frustrations that may
trigger your emotions, but also take time to examine
the health of the relationships you assume support
you in your trials. The power of the Passion,
Crucifixion and Resurrection, and the intention to
actively participate in Lent, is the invitation to
surrender ALL, so we might rise with Jesus on Easter
morning. Peace, Rob Michaels

Altar Guild Attends Diocesan Meeting
Carol Regna reports that eight Holy Trinity
Alter Guild members attended the annual meeting of
the Central Florida Diocesan Altar Guild at St.
Michael’s in Orlando on Feb 21st. The day began
with a short business meeting followed by a
Eucharistic service, and installation of new Board
members by Bishop John Howe.
Afterwards, the Guild members went to the
Parish house for presentations given by Church
Insurance, and by the St. Michael’s Flower Guild. Our
members were suitably impressed with the day’s
events.
Each Parish Altar Guild was introduced as a
group, and then all enjoyed a delicious lunch. This
event was a very happy social and educational
experience for the Guild, and they are already look ing
forward to next year’s event.
Russell Casson will be leading the
Gardens & Grounds Workers on
Saturday, March 21 at 8 AM
