Is Lent Still Relevant?
We live in what seems like most perilous times.
We are exposed to the cumulative everyday stress of
a mass media and corporate greed that seems to
threaten the very sanity of our culture and minds. We
have the ability, militarily or environment- ally, and we
have seen that there are many who would appear
open to having that happen.
Humanity fights over power, often wrapped in the
sacred words of religion, not only in our own Christian
denominations, but also in violence between the
great Religions of the world. Is this really what God
has in mind for Creation?
So with all the troubles of the present day, does
Lent become just one more burden on an already
overextended consciousness? In my own experience,
I would have to state a resounding NO!
As Christians, we have been invited to enter into
Communion with God through the example of the
Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent
reflects, in the palest of ways, the Passion of our
Lord, and that most revealing of Jesus’ pleas: “My
God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” It is only
by detaching ourselves from every human
connection- both the good and the bad- that we are
able to enter into the total naked abandonment that
Jesus had to experience on the Cross in order to rise
again. Lent invites us into a personal and interior
exploration of our own ability- or rather inability- to
deal with life’s burdens without any help from God,
our loved one’s or the Church.
It is only by denying that which we THINK we
are, that we can enter into the Resurrection of whom
God has actually created us to BE. This Lent, take
time to explore the angst and frustrations that may
trigger your emotions, but also take time to examine
the health of the relationships you assume support
you in your trials. The power of the Passion,
Crucifixion and Resurrection, and the intention to
actively participate in Lent, is the invitation to
surrender ALL, so we might rise with Jesus on Easter
morning. Peace, Rob Michaels
Volunteers Invited To Habitat Dinner
Habitat for Humanity is inviting all our
volunteers who worked on the Habitat Home in
Paisley, or who worked on the stamp program with
Annette Freeman, to attend a 20th anniversary
celebration banquet, on Friday March 20th at the
Morrison United Methodist Church, 1005 West Main
St. in Leesburg.
The evening will begin with a social hour
starting at 5:30 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30.
If you wish to attend this event, please
contact Annette at home at 753-0025. Leave a
message on her answering machine if no one is
home when you call. Our final RSVP to Habitat must
be given by March 13th.
Altar Guild Attends Diocesan Meeting
Carol Regna reports that eight Holy Trinity
Alter Guild members attended the annual meeting of
the Central Florida Diocesan Altar Guild at St.
Michael’s in Orlando on Feb 21st. The day began
with a short business meeting followed by a
Eucharistic service, and installation of new Board
members by Bishop John Howe.
Afterwards, the Guild members went to the
Parish house for presentations given by Church
Insurance, and by the St. Michael’s Flower Guild. Our
members were suitably impressed with the day’s
events.
Each Parish Altar Guild was introduced as a
group, and then all enjoyed a delicious lunch. This
event was a very happy social and educational
experience for the Guild, and they are already look ing
forward to next year’s event.

Tri-County “Interfaith Group” Forming
For anyone interested, there will be an
Organizational Meeting exploring the possibility of
forming an Interfaith Alliance on Tuesday, March 10th
at 10am at the New Covenant United Methodist
Church, County Road 101 (north, just behind
Crispers at Southern Trace Shopping Plaza- Rte.
466), The Villages.
The group is inclusive of all faiths: Christian,
Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Unitarian, just to name
a few. This Alliance would promote greater dialogue
between all faiths by organizing Discussion Panels,
Presentations and Round-tables open to the public
concerning any and all aspects of the “Human
Condition.” The group may also become involved in
coordinating community service projects involving
area participants.
Light refreshments will be served. For more
information contact Rob Michaels at 750-0246, or
email at ptownrob@comcast.net
Newcomer’s Party Big Success
About 40 Newcomers and
Oldgoers gathered for a
Newcomer’s Party in the Parish
Hall on Sunday, February 22.
Among the participants
were Fr. Michael and members
of the Vestry, as well as almost
30 newcomers. After an hour
or so of fellowship, each person in the room
introduced themselves, and the range of diversity
was astounding. Established members spoke of Holy
Trinity’s various ministries and activities. Fr. Michael
and Vestry members supplied hors d’oeuvres &
beverages. The party was a great success as we
welcomed our newest members.
Mardi Gras Party a Big Hit
The Mardi Gras Party was a one great
celebration attended by 80 plus folks. Food, music,
dancing, and great friendship were in abundance as
we celebrated the last evening before the beginning
of Lent. The Hall was decorated with all the fixings-
including a disco ball for the dance floor!
Pictures of the party are posted on the Holy
Trinity web site for your viewing enjoyment. Thanks
to Rob Michaels, Don Piper, & Shellie Leon for
handling the details. Special thanks to Pauline
Kepner, Amy Rowell & Mary Robinson for handling
the kitchen duties.
While Jambalaya was the main dish, many
homemade dishes came from the attendees,
including Fr. Michael’s Pimento Cheese spread!
Special thanks to Albert from Bourbon St. Café for
the gift certificate-door prize. He’s got a great
restaurant, with great prices in Spanish Springs, as
well as a deep commitment to the Lord. Check it out
next time you dine out!
Bishop to Visit on March 29th
Hugo Pina-Lopez, Assistant Bishop for the
Diocese of Central Florida, and the first Bishop of
Honduras, retired, will visit Holy Trinity Sunday,
March 29 to celebrate Eucharist with our Parish. A
bishop traditionally visits each parish in the Diocese
once a year, often Confirming or Receiving those
wishing to become members of the Episcopal
Church.
All baptized Episcopalians, as well as those
from other denominations, are expected to receive
the Sacrament of Confirmation, although there are
three exceptions. Confirmation expresses a mature
commitment to Christ and a desire to receive strength
from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the bishop’s
laying on of hands.
The exceptions to Episcopal confirmation include
those who have been previously confirmed by a
bishop in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or
Evangelical Lutheran Church. They are received and
welcomed as confirmed members of The Episcopal
Church by the bishop as well.
Those wishing to be received or confirmed, or to
transfer your membership to Holy Trinity are
encouraged to contact Father Michael.
CropWalk Great Success
Six members of Holy Trinity walked for the 61st
annual CropWalk at the Venetian Gardens in
Leesburg on the morning of February 22nd. Members
included Donna Bott, Annette and Bob Freeman
Pauline Kepner, Jeni Schotta Patrick McLaughlin.
Charlotte Bauer also raised funds, but was not able
to attend the walk.
CROP, which stands for Communities
Responding to Overcome Poverty, is an outreach
of Church World Service. The Walk was just over 2
miles and took the intrepid crew just over 30 minutes.
Holy Trinity’s walkers joined nearly 100 others who
turned out for the walk as well.
Annette Freeman reports that time passed
quickly as the entire crew kept a steady pace, having
a good time in part because the walk ers knew they
were participating in a good cause.
The group had sponsorship from close to 50
parishioners, family and friends. The final figure that
the Holy Trinity Walkers took in was $1,120, of which
25%- $280, was given to the Leesburg Area Food
Bank , along with food that was donated at the time of
the Walk .
Lenten Quiet Time
The Church will be open for quiet Lenten
Meditation on Wednesday, March 11, from
10:00 am until Noon. Please feel free to use
this time of silence and inspired devotions to
allow God to speak to you in the silence of
your heart.
